The Toll for Motorhomes in Slovenia - What to Consider?

To travel by car, motorcycle, or motorhome in Slovenia you need a vignette. Most motorways and expressways in the country are subject to tolls. However, the toll in Slovenia is not the same for all types of vehicles.

This predominantly applies to vacationers traveling by motorhome in Slovenia. Though not all motorhomes are categorized the same in Slovenia.

Before setting out on a trip in a motorhome through Slovenia, you should check which regulations apply to motorhomes on Slovenian roads.

Toll in Slovenia: motorhome over 3.5 t

The toll in Slovenia is obligatory for all vehicles but the type of toll is not the same for all vehicles. Depending on the weight and height, not all motorhomes in Slovenia are categorized the same either.

For all vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons, a route-dependent toll is charged. This also applies to motorhomes. With the DarsGo transponder, you can pay the tolls automatically if your motorhome weighs over 3.5 tons.

We will explain in more detail how the different costs (tolls) work in Slovenia. That way your trip through Slovenia by motorhome will be easier and cheaper. First, we need to get a brief overview of the toll system in Slovenia.

Tolls in Slovenia - an overview

If you are driving a vehicle in Slovenia, you should always keep the following in mind: a vignette in Slovenia is mandatory on motorways and on many roads that lead to motorways.

Which vehicles are the vignette mandatory for in Slovenia?

The vehicle classification for vehicles under 3.5 tons in Slovenia distinguishes the following categories:

Category Vehicle
Class 1
  • Motorcycles
Class 2A
  • Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW, under 1.3 m at front axle;
  • motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW
Class 2B
  • Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW, over 1.3 m at front axle

The abbreviation GVW refers to the gross vehicle weight. However, it is also important to consider the height at the front axle.

Motorhomes under 3.5 t belong to the same category as cars and motorcycles. Therefore, vignettes are mandatory for these motorhomes.

NOTE: You must also take care of camping equipment attached to the motorhome. Make sure that your motorhome meets all the conditions of class 2A before deciding how to pay the toll in Slovenia.

Route-dependent toll for motorhomes in Slovenia

Regardless of the total height, the toll for motorhomes applies to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons. If your motorhome is heavier than 3.5 tons, the toll is route-dependent.

This means that no vignette is required for motorhomes in this category. The toll is calculated automatically based on the length of the route.

Special regulations for motorhomes in Slovenia

In addition to the vehicle classifications that apply to most European countries, Slovenia has separate regulations for passenger cars, sidecars, and motorhomes. A higher toll is charged for motor vehicles higher than 1.3 meters at the front axle.

A vehicle with a trailer is affected in the same way. However, there is no special toll for the caravan. Motorhomes up to 3.5 tons belong to the same class as passenger cars, regardless of their height (2A).

Transponder requirement for motorhomes

For motorhomes weighing more than 3.5 tons, a so-called transponder requirement applies in Slovenia. These transponders are devices that calculate the total distance traveled.

Based on the measured distance, the toll is then calculated without the motorhome driver having to stop at the toll booth to pay. The calculation is done automatically via radio. These transponders for Slovenia are called DarsGo. Transponders have been mandatory in Slovenia for motorhomes over 3.5 t since April 1, 2018.

DarsGo - What is that?

The DarsGo transponder is a radio communication device. It is placed in the motorhome on the inside of the windshield and works similarly to the GO Box used in Austria.

The transponder can be registered at service stations of the Slovenian freeway company DARS. However, it is also possible to register online.

Conclusion

The toll is obligatory for motorhomes in Slovenia. Whether you pay the toll with a vignette or with a transponder depends on the weight of the motorhome.

Violation of the mandatory toll in Slovenia can be costly. Slovenian police have the right to collect these fines on the spot immediately. If you pay immediately, the fine only costs half as much. Remember, paying the toll in advance is always cheaper than the fines for a toll violation.

Holidaymakers traveling in Slovenia by motorhome should therefore find out before the trip which classification their motorhome belongs to and take appropriate precautions.
